Bill Holland, retired from Monroe Clinic where he held several roles, talks about his best friend Buddy, a 10-year-old Jack Russell terrier mix.
Holland got Buddy from the Green County Humane Society about five years ago after his previous dog died. "There's so many nice dogs out there," Holland said. "He knows he's been saved, so he's just been pure joy."

Describe Buddy's personality.
When he's just around me, he's nice and mellow. When he's around other people, he's really excited - he just loves people and kids. He's my icebreaker. I'm in a number of service groups and everyone knows my dog. When I volunteer at Family Promise, the kids like to pet him. Boy, he brightens them up.
What do you and Buddy like to do
together?
In the summertime, he likes to run in prairie by himself. When I'm out there working, he's with me 100 percent. Sometimes I'll get ready to call for him and if I turn around, he's right there. We are inseparable. He's a little fair-weather dog. He doesn't like the cold rainstorms, especially if there's thunder. Even in the middle of the night, he'll get me up if it's storming.
What has it been like having Buddy in your life?
Well it's just been pure joy. I just like him so much, and he still likes me more. He's just really happy. He loves to spend time in the truck. He'll put his paw on the armrest and look out the window, and if it's warm out, he'll stick his head out. It doesn't matter if I leave him for 15 minutes or overnight - he's still happy to see me. I don't think dogs have clocks; he's just always tickled pink. For a person who's single, it just makes life so much fun. There are so many dogs out there that would make wonderful companions.
