Monroe resident Beverly Rufer, who is retired from Lucky Seven where she worked for nine years, talks about her best friend 5-year-old Yorkshire terrier Rascal.

Rufer got Rascal almost five years ago from a breeder south of Freeport. Rufer's daughter Joyce Kubly referred to him as being a rascal when she picked him up for her mother, which is how he got his name. She decided she wanted a Yorkie after meeting a few and thought they seemed like good dogs. Rufer has always had a dog for 58 years, and Rascal is her first Yorkie.

Describe Rascal's personality.

He's very sensitive. He's protective of me. If my husband (Bob) raises his voice, Rascal will run between us and give him a look that says "stop that." He'll look out the door and bark if anyone walks by the house. He thinks he needs to protect me.

What do you like to do together?

We like to sit in our chair in the living room and we go outside and sit on the bench. I tie him up on a leash and if a bird lands in the yard, he'll chase them away like "You can't be in my yard!" We'll play with his toys and he'll bring it back, but after a while he won't and he'll want you to chase him.

What has it been like having Rascal in your life?

It's been very memorable. Happy. My husband's gone a lot and it helps me to not be lonely. He's my companion, especially when my husband's not around.
