DARLINGTON - A Belmont man with six prior convictions of driving while intoxicated was charged Thursday in Lafayette County Circuit Court with his seventh.
Douglas Edward Popp, 52, faces a Class G felony charge of operating while intoxicated (seventh, eighth or ninth offense). If convicted, he could be sentenced up to five years in prison and five years on parole.
A deputy arrested Popp late Tuesday afternoon after responding to a report of a possibly intoxicated driver who almost hit another vehicle on County G in Belmont Township.
Popp was jailed, then released Thursday on a $500 cash bond with the conditions that he not drink, take nonprescribed controlled substances or go into bars or liquor stores.
State court records indicate Popp was convicted of his fifth OWI in 1998 and his sixth in 2001, both in Lafayette County.
He has an adjourned initial appearance scheduled May 4 before Judge William Johnston.
