MONROE - The fate of a downtown discount retail business remains up in the air, as city officials await word from inspectors that improvements have been made to the condition of its building.
According to City Administrator Phil Rath, Bargain Depot, 1800 12th Street, several weeks ago was given a 30-day closure notice after an inspector discovered structural problems.
"Water (related) damage led to concerns about the safety of the building," said Rath. "It was to the point where there needed to something done right away."
Bargain Depot's owners, who could not be immediately reached for comment Thursday, were given 30 days to repair the damage, but Rath said he was unaware of any work being done thus far.
