DARLINGTON - A Bagley man was officially charged Tuesday with attempted homicide after he reportedly attempted to shoot a woman in the Town of White Oak Springs last week.

David Arnold Heisz, 59, is charged with a Class A felony count first-degree attempted homicide, a Class H felony count of false imprisonment and a misdemeanor count of battery.

Heisz was reportedly involved in a violent altercation with a woman while in his vehicle outside her residence in the 3000 block of Penny Benton Road, Town of White Oak Springs, on March 2.

According to a criminal complaint, Heisz had previously called the woman and demanded that she return some money that he believed she stole from his residence. Heisz reportedly threatened to kill her if she did not return the money.

Later that day, Heisz arrived at the woman's apartment building and waited in the parking lot. The woman eventually approached Heisz and Heisz requested that she take a ride with him. The woman reportedly believed that Heisz intended to apologize for his conduct and agreed.

However, upon entering the vehicle, the woman saw a handgun in Heisz's possession. When Heisz again demanded money from her, the woman attempted to leave the vehicle, but was prevented from doing so when Heisz reportedly grabbed her arm.

Heisz then reportedly shoved the woman's head against the vehicle's central console, repeatedly demanding the money. After an extended altercation, during which Heisz punched the woman in the head and the woman clawed Heisz's face and tore at his beard, the woman was able to extricate herself from Heisz and exit the vehicle.

However, as the woman escaped, she heard a gunshot pass nearby. Later investigation would discover a .45 bullet in the ground in a neighboring cornfield.

Heisz left the scene, but police responded to reports of the gunshot and identified him shortly thereafter.

In Heisz's vehicle, police found two .45-caliber handguns, a .380 handgun, a knife, a stun gun and several zip ties that Heisz said were intended to be used as handcuffs.

Heisz was denied bond on Tuesday because of the severity of the charges. He will next appear in court for a preliminary hearing on March 13.

His charges carry a maximum possible sentence of life imprisonment.
