DARLING TON - Lafayette County sheriff's police are urging residents to be on the lookout for a scam involving suspects purporting to be from the Internal Revenue Service.
According to a statement from Sheriff Scott Pedley, a county residence recently received a bogus IRS letter, which also included an accurate Social Security number. The letter told the couple they could qualify for an additional tax credit of $1,300 - and that their current tax return had not yet been received by the IRS.
They are then directed to send a "freshly signed" copy of their tax return to an address on the letter quickly to qualify for the credit.
But the Lafayette County couple who received the letter became suspicious and contacted their tax preparer, who determined the letter to be false and called authorities.
Pedley said his department has notified federal postal and treasury officials of the incident, and is urging area residents to be wary of giving out personal information to those claiming to be from the IRS, without verifying their identity.
