MONROE - Bidders vying for bragging rights dropped a total of $10,700 on the annual Dairy Youth Recognition auction Sunday at the Green County Fair.
The 2012 total didn't break the 2011 record of $13,500, but it did come in as the third highest in the past four years of record bidding. The auction brought in $9,725 in 2010 and about $8,300 in 2009.
Half of each winning bid goes to fund 4-H and FFA dairy youth scholarships and the other half to the winning youth. Winning bidders receive a crystal plaque inscribed with the youth's name and the bidder's name to display at their place of business.
n Supreme Dairy Sportsmanship Award - Tess Zettle, Juda Jolly Juniors 4-H, Brian and Kim Zettle, $2,000 Mahlkuch Electric.
This award is presented to an outstanding Senior Dairy Exhibitors who demonstrated strong sportsmanship in and outside of the show ring, enthusiasm for the project, a willingness to help others and a strong commitment to the youth dairy project, during their entire Green County Fair dairy exhibiting career. Only dairy exhibitors who have not previously participated in the Dairy Youth Auction are eligible to receive the award.
n Senior Showmanship Winner (Grades 10 and up) - Chris Voegeli, Monticello FFA, son of Bryan and Beth Voegeli, $2,000 Ruchti Stainless, Inc.
n Supreme Senior Champion Grade Female - Donnie Nieman, Brodhead FFA, son of Joel and Kathy Nieman, $1,000 Zweifel Construction, Inc.
n Beginning Showmanship Winner (Grades 3-6) - Emily Makos, Spring Grove Workers 4-H, daughter of Eric and Jody Makos, $1,000 Colony Brands.
n Intermediate Showmanship Winner (Grades 7-9) - Amber Dammen, Dougherty Creek 4-H, daughter of Gray and Amy Dammen, $959 Maple Leaf Cheese.
n Low Somatic Cell Count Cow (award is based on 305 lactation days on record and considered the "healthiest cow at the fair") - Breinne Hendrickson, Belleville FFA, daughter of Jeff and Kate Hendrickson, $850 Washington Implement.
n Supreme Showmanship Champion - Paige Hoesly, Clarence Bridge Pioneers 4-H, daughter of Todd and Tricia Hoesly, $800 Dairy Directions, Inc.
n Supreme Senior Champion Registered Female - Brooks Hendrickson, Dayton Dairyland 4-H, son of Jeff and Kate Hendrickson, $700 Middleton Machining and Welding, Inc.
n Supreme Junior Champion Registered Female - Paige Hoesly, Clarence Bridge Pioneers 4-H, daughter of Todd and Tricia Hoesly, $700 Klondike Cheese Co.
n Supreme Junior Champion Grade Female - Azaleigh Steiner, Clarence Bridge Pioneer 4-H, daughter of Danielle and Brian Vender, $700 Brodhead Health and Fitness.
This was the tenth year the auction has been held. It has funded more than $20,000 in scholarships for about 100 youths since it began in 2003. A total of $2,975 in scholarships was distributed this year by the Dairy Youth Auction Committee.
