Arti-Facts: M. Hohner Accordion
2692a.jpg
The Green County Historical Museum has many vintage musical instruments, including the accordion shown here. This accordion was used by the late I. Fritz Schild of Monroe; he purchased it around 1927 from Sears Roebuck for less than $50. Fritz yodeled and sang for the "Country Home Dancer."

The wooden accordion was made by M Hohner Company of Trossingen, Germany, of the Black Forest region. Matthias Hohner, a former clockmaker, began the company in 1857, producing harmonicas in his kitchen using advanced manufacturing techniques of the time.

The company last year celebrated its 150th birthday and continues to produce harmonicas, accordions, clavinets, drums and toys. Most of its products are sold in Germany; however, its principal export market continues to be the United States.
