Arrest made in Sept. shots fired incident

FREEPORT — Freeport Police announced they had arrested a suspect in a triple shooting on a city street late last month.

In a statement, police said they had arrested 40-year-old Raymond E. Adams of Freeport inside a home in the 400 block of W. Clark Street on a felony warrant stemming from a shots-fired incident on Sept. 25, 2024 in the 900 block of S. Carroll Avenue.

“Raymond Adams was transported to the Stephenson County Jail where he was served a copy of the felony warrant and complaint that charged Adams with two (2) counts of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, two (2) counts of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, and two (2) counts of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon,” the police statement said. “Adams was processed at the Stephenson County Jail and released into the custody of the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office.”

According to court records, Adams remains in custody.

Around 1:30 p.m. Sept. 25, police say they were called to a South Carroll Avenue location for a shots-fired incident. When officers arrived, they found two victims. A third victim, meanwhile, was taken to FHN Hospital by a private vehicle. 

The victims were in their late 40s and early 50s. Police provided no update on the conditions of the victims, although one of them was transferred to a Rockford hospital.

The defendant has an extensive criminal record in Illinois that includes multiple felonies, including an unlawful possession of a handgun conviction dating to 2004, and a 2017 conviction for aggravated domestic battery/strangle.
