Armory gets a little attention

MADISON - The National Guard Armory in Monroe will receive its first remodeling in a $787,600 project approved last week by the State Building Commission.

The funding, $433,550 from federal and $365,050 from state sources, will upgrade heating and ventilation equipment, add air conditioning to some offices, construct 1,900 square feet for storage, make restrooms ADA compliant and install a fire protection system.

The Guard's 64th Rear Operations Center is housed at the armory at 1130 30th St. and the project will better serve the unit and its mission, said Sgt. Sara Roeske, a Wisconsin National Guard spokesperson.

"This facility requires additional office space to accommodate unit administrative functions and additional storage space for equipment. New electrical services and panels are required to provide sufficient power for the new air conditioning systems, new lighting, additional outlets for new automation equipment and audio/visual training equipment.

"The overall condition of our building envelope is good, and there is adequate space for the remodeling work ....( this) will provide and more energy efficient and functional facility, Roeske wrote in a reply to a written question.

The building has not been remodeled since constructed in 1973, said Lt. Col. David Pulvermacher.

Construction bids for the project will be opened Sept. 9, with construction anticipated to begin in November and completed in August 2010, Pulvermacher said.

The Building Commission last week also unanimously approved remodeling projects totaling $2.34 million for armories in Madison, Oshkosh and Two Rivers.
