DARLINGTON - An Argyle man was charged Monday with sexually assaulting a child after he allegedly groped an underage girl on June 17.

Stephen C. Ableman, 35, faces a Class C felony count of second-degree sexual assault of a child after an incident in which he reportedly touched an underage girl's genitals at an Argyle residence.

According to a criminal complaint, the child was sleeping in the bed of a woman at the residence, while Ableman slept on a couch in another room.

However, at some time in the night Ableman joined the two in the bed. While the woman slept, Ableman began rubbing the child's back and buttocks beneath her clothes.

Ableman then began groping the child's breasts and genitals before he fell asleep. In the morning, the girl extricated herself and walked home.

Ableman signed a $5,000 signature bond Monday with conditions that he have no contact with the child, her residence or her family, nor with any minors.

Ableman's preliminary hearing will take place on July 24. His maximum possible sentence is 25 years in prison.
