MONROE - Green County's July unemployment rate was the lowest it has been in 2010.
Unemployment statistics released Wednesday by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development show Green County unemployment dropped in July from the previous month by almost 1 percent, to 7.3 percent. The July rate one year ago was 9.2 percent.
The Green County work force rose by 478 people in July, and 127 people came off unemployment status.
Lafayette County's unemployment rate dropped just 0.1 percent, to 6.5 percent, but its workforce also dropped by 316 people. Only 29 people came off unemployment status. The unemployment rate for the county in July 2009 was 7.4 percent.
Lafayette County's lowest unemployment rate for 2010 was in April at 6.4 percent.
The local numbers released Wednesday by the department are not seasonally adjusted.
The statewide seasonally adjusted average was down 0.3 percent, to 7.8 percent, which is 1 percent lower than in July 2009. The state's workforce increased in July by 1,851 people since June.
The state's lowest unemployment rate in 2010 was 7.7 percent in May.
Beloit and Racine continue to struggle with the highest unemployment of any Wisconsin city.
Beloit leads all cities with 15.9 percent unemployment and Racine is second at 14.5 percent.
However, both cities had improved from their rates in June and from a year ago.
Department Secretary Roberta Gassman says the improved unemployment rates for cities across the state shows that the economy is slowly improving.
Unemployment rates for July were either lower or unchanged in all but five of Wisconsin's 72 counties compared with last year. They were lower or unchanged in 28 of the 31 largest cities as well.
