Another jam-packed weekend for Monticello Homecoming

MONTICELLO - Monticello Community Club is holding the annual Homecoming celebration in Monticello, beginning with a softball tournament at 7 p.m. July 6 and continuing throughout the weekend.

There will be a carnival for children beginning July 6 with a wristband special only on that day from 6 to 10 p.m.

Food will be available all weekend. The Lionesses will have their food stand open beginning at 4 p.m. July 7, serving brats, hot dogs, barbecue and homemade pies donated by community members. Pie flavors change daily. The Lion's Club will be serving their never-frozen homemade fried cheese curds and mushrooms all weekend. The Boy Scouts will be serving grilled sandwiches and more, and the MHS Sports Boosters will have fresh-squeezed ice cold lemonade. The Friends of the Library will be providing brats, hot dogs, nachos, popcorn and more with cold beverages at the ball diamond.



Friday

The FFA and FFA alumni will be serving a traditional fish boil with boiled potatoes, onions, fish and melted butter beginning at 5 p.m. July 7 at the octagon shelter near the lake. Prices are $10 in advance for adult dinners or $11 at the door and $5 for a child's portion. Tickets may be purchased at Greenwoods State Bank, Gempelers, Kubly's Service Station and Lucky's Farm Tavern.

The weekend mud volleyball tournament begins at 6 p.m. and continues Saturday and Sunday. There will be 16 teams vying for the $500 first prize.

The Homecoming Variety Show will showcase local talent at 7 p.m. in a free variety show format at TnD's Bar & Grill, formerly known as the Monticello House. The Unusuals are playing from 8 p.m. to midnight and Cherry Bomb will open the show. There is no admission charge.



Saturday

Monticello PTO's second annual Pony Trot 5K run/walk and Little Pony 1K begins with registration at 7 a.m. July 8. This is one of two fundraisers the PTO uses to raise money to support the school. During the 2016-17 school year, the PTO donated $6,000 in the form of teacher grants, sponsorship of DARE, Post Prom, PBIS, classroom treats and senior scholarships. Register by Sunday to guarantee receiving a T-shirt. The Little Pony 1K begins at 8 a.m. and the 5K fun run/walk at 8:30 a.m. Registration forms can be found in the news section of the Monticello School website at http://www.monticello.k12.wi.us.

Mud volleyball, grass volleyball and 3-on-3 basketball will be happening all day Saturday. Sign up in advance by contacting the coordinator. Motorcyclists may register for the Monticello Homecoming Ride at 9:30 a.m. at TnD's Bar & Grill. The ride leaves at 11 a.m. sharp from there. Proceeds go to the Empty Stocking Fund.

For children ages 3 to 10, there will be a free Kids Pedal Tractor Pull. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. at West Monroe Street in front of the Monticello Pool House. There will be four age classes and trophies. No advance registration is necessary. Participating children will get a coupon for money off at local food vendors, thanks to local sponsors.

The Monticello Area Historical Society Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The current focus is on schools: "From slate boards to smart boards."

Registration for the canoe races around Lake Montesian is at 1:30 p.m. Races will begin at 2 p.m. Teams will consist of seniors over 55; adult males 17 and older; adult females 17 and older; co-ed; and children ages 12 and over. There is no fee to enter. Monticello Community Club is sponsoring the prizes. Following is the "triathlon" relay race. The team divisions are the same as the canoe races.

Community firefighter water fights will start at 1 p.m. on West North Avenue, by the pool, as half a dozen local fire departments vie for the honor and the trophies.

The Greenfield Brothers will entertain from 2 to 5 p.m. at the main beer tent, sponsored by Harvey W. Kubly, C.P.A. and Freitag Financial Services. Andy Yaun, the Rockabilly Kid, will perform from 3 to 7 p.m. at the ball diamond beer tent, sponsored by Monticello Community Club.

Zwingli Brotherhood is presenting "An Update of the Green County Barn Inventory" by published author and historian Kim Tschudy at 6 p.m. in the sanctuary of Zwingli United Church of Christ, 416 E. Lake Ave., Monticello. This free, 40-minute presentation will describe the work being done to record historical barns and outbuildings throughout Green County with pictures and stories. Live music by Family Business, with no cover charge, is from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. at the beer stand, with a break at about 9:45 p.m. for fireworks, courtesy of the Monticello Community Club and Greenwoods State Bank. The fireworks are set off at Lake Montesian and can be viewed from several locations. The rain date will be at 9:45 p.m. Sunday.



Sunday

A community church service will begin at 9:30 a.m. July 9 at Montesian Gardens, hosted by Zwingli United Church of Christ, Monticello. After the service is a chicken barbecue lunch, sponsored by Monticello Community Club. The group is serving half chicken dinners for $10 or just chicken for $7. Serving will begin at 11 a.m. at the octagon shelter. Carryouts will be available. Delivery service also will be available for senior citizens and handicapped or disabled persons within the village limits who don't have anyone to pick up their chicken. Call 608-938-4339 before 7 p.m. July 8 to order delivery.

The parade will begin at 2 p.m. at the east end of Lake Avenue and will proceed through to the north end of Main Street. Parade entries and monetary donations to help sponsor some of the unique entries still are being accepted. The mud volleyball and softball tournaments continue from Saturday. Champions will be decided on Sunday. The bean bag competition will be at 3 p.m. at the baseball beer tent. The cost is $10 per co-ed two-person team. It is a single-elimination event for 32 teams. Registration is that day. For questions, contact Andrew Anderson at 608-279-1430.

The Sunday music lineup is as follows: Precocious, an all-girl rock band sponsored by the Monticello Community Club, will perform from 3 to 6 p.m. at the baseball beer tent; the Zweifel Brothers will perform after the parade from 3 to 6 p.m. at the main beer stand. They are sponsored by Monticello Ford Inc. and Voegeli Chevrolet Buick Inc. Frenchtown Band will play from 7 to 10:30 p.m., sponsored by Robel Transfer and the Monticello Community Club. The raffle drawing is at 9 p.m. There is no entry fee all weekend for any entertainment at the beer stand.

Raffle tickets will be sold for the following: cash prizes; Badger football tickets for two and a tailgate pass valued at $175; Brewers tickets for four, a parking pass and a tailgate pass valued at $175; a grill valued at $150; a standup toolbox with drawers valued at $100; and a turkey fryer valued at $100. Raffle tickets are $5 for a book of six or $1 each and can be purchased now at Monticello businesses or from any member of the Monticello Community Club. During Homecoming, tickets are available at the beer stand. Proceeds go back into the community. The raffle drawing will be held at 9 p.m. Sunday at the beer stand. One does not need to be present to win.

The Friends of the Library and the Lionesses always need help at their stands during the weekend. Donations of pies also will be accepted.

Monticello Homecoming is sponsored by The Monticello Community Club, the Monticello Chamber of Commerce and the Monticello Lions and Lionesses.

The Monticello Community Club is a local organization that has been in existence for 80 years. The club's purpose is to make the community a great place to live and raise a family, according to a news release. The annual Homecoming celebration is the main fundraiser for projects that better Monticello. Through the years, the club has contributed to the development and improvement of Lake Montesian, the village park, ball diamond and new basketball court, the octagon shelter house, the depot, the pool, the village playground equipment and many other projects in the village, as well as to fund scholarships for local graduates. The Monticello Chamber of Commerce, formally Monticello Business and Professional Association, consists of area businesses and professionals working together to improve the local business climate and ensure a thriving, strong community.
