Albany students plan charity event

ALBANY - A charity event to help Africans in need is scheduled for 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the cafeteria and elementary gym at the Albany Community Middle School.

Fifth- and sixth-graders, who have been researching Africa in science, humanity and reading classes, organized the event with help from teachers Jeff Campbell and Michael Oellerich. Derik Doescher, another teacher, and Darlene Machtan, a charter school consultant who works with the school district, had the students read the book "A Long Walk to Water," a true story about Africa.

The event will include activities, research displays and a silent auction of student-created items. The money raised will be divided between two charities: Water for Sudan Inc., which uses the money received to help people in Africa access clean drinking water, and the Himalayan Institute, which builds libraries and clinics and educates people in areas of Africa about better hygiene.
