Aid for flood, freeze damages made available

MADISON - Lafayette and Green counties are among those declared disasters by federal agriculture officials for having crops damaged by floods and cold weather. The designation makes financial assistance available to farmers, including low-interest loans.

Lafayette County was among 24 affected by this past spring's floods, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Landowners in 15 contiguous counties, including Green County, also are eligible for relief.

Lafayette County also was one of five counties affected by combined frost, extreme cold and winterkill. Green County is among 11 contiguous counties included.

Eligible because of flooding: Adams, Columbia, Crawford, Dane, Dodge, Grant, Green Lake, Jefferson, Juneau, Kenosha, Lafayette, Manitowoc, Marquette, Milwaukee, Monroe, Racine, Richland, Rock, Sauk, Sheboygan, Vernon, Walworth, Waukesha and Winnebago. Contiguous counties eligible: Brown, Calumet, Fond du Lac, Green, Iowa, Jackson, Kewaunee, La Crosse, Outagamie, Ozaukee, Portage, Washington, Waupaca, Waushara and Wood.

Eligible because of effects of frost, freeze, extreme cold and winterkill: Burnett, Lafayette, Polk, St. Croix, and Door. Contiguous counties eligible: Burnett, Chippewa, Dunn, Grant, Green, Iowa, Pierce, Rusk, Sawyer, Washburn and Kewaunee.
