Administrators, staff given pay increases

MONROE - Monroe school district administrators and exempt staff will get raises next year, following a unanimous vote by the school board Monday.

Last year, administrative salaries were frozen due to the economic concerns throughout the community.

Administrators will get a 1.08 percent salary increase, and the exempt staff will get a 1.5 percent increase. District Business Manager Ron Olson said the increases will cost the district about $15,500 next year.

Olson said the board thought it was important to give the administrators and exempt staff, which includes positions like the food services director and buildings and grounds supervisor, an increase in their salaries.

"They took a freeze last year and the district appreciated it," Olson said.

The board also learned Monday the district should end the year about $1 million under budget for the 2009-10 school year.

Olson said the district was able to make some cuts in certain areas including, gas and utility costs, which helped the district save money.

He said the savings were a result of sound fiscal decisions.

"We always have a goal of bringing the budget in at under 3 percent," he said.

The district's budget for operating expenses for the 2009-10 was $30.3 million. Because the district was able to save money, the operating expenses will actually be about $29.3 million.
