MONROE - Bids on the West Side Fire Station were accepted and contracts will be awarded.
An estimated date for construction to begin is in April.
The City of Monroe Common Council voted 8-1 in favor of the resolution Tuesday. Alderman Thurston Hanson voted against. Alderman Keith Ingwell was absent.
Midwest Builders, of Fennimore, bid $376,987 for phase one of the project, which includes site work and the construction of the steel building.
Harmony Construction Management, of Madison, bid $258,000 for interior work, and J.F. Ahearn Fire Protection, of Madison, bid $18,922 for the sprinkler and fire alarm systems.
Fire Chief Daryl Rausch said the project, including bids and a 7 percent contingency fund, is $14,000 under the projected cost of $900,000.
Rausch is trying to get contractors to hire more local companies before signing contracts.
Rausch said the entire project will hopefully be completed by Oct. 1.
The next step is for the city to bond for the project. That process will most likely start at the Feb. 17 Common Council meeting, Rausch said.
