A Place in History: Citizens Bank, South Wayne

SOUTH WAYNE - Along Center Street in the village, population about 475, are small businesses, the fire department and the local bank.

For many years the banking business in South Wayne was managed by L.W. Heindel and Son at their store. In 1903 the Waddingtons in Argyle incorporated the Bank of South Wayne. Oscar Olson was the first cashier.

The original bank burned down and a new building was built in 1904 at the corner of Center Street and Galena Avenue.

Olson and Frank Tree took over the bank and managed it for several years. Clifford Simmons and William Steffens aided the two men.

The bank remained a small-town, locally-owned bank for almost 100 years.

In 2002 Citizens Bank, with headquarters in Darlington, purchased the bank but many people in South Wayne, people who have lived in the village for years, still refer to it as the Bank of South Wayne.

In 2005, an unknown person robbed the bank. The case remains open.

After more than a century, the bank will close April 30 when the South Wayne branch of Citizens Bank ceases to exist.
