The original home was demolished on July 26 and the new home completed on July 31. Between 3,000 and 4,000 volunteers worked on the project.
RICHLAND CENTER - Skip Miller likens it to two teams trying to win their own Super Bowl in the same day.

"The roofing and siding were going on at the same time they were insulating, dry walling, and painting," said Miller, who is co-owner along with sister Rhoda Hehn and brother Eric Miller of Tri-State Aluminum Products Company in Belleville.

"It was like two teams trying to win the Super Bowl - both with the same ultimate goal, ending up in the end zone and getting the job done," Miller said.

A couple weeks ago, the cast and crew of the ABC television show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" made a stop in Richland Center at the Rochelle Anders-Beatty home.

Anders-Beatty is a first grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary in Richland Center where she has taught for 29 years. In 2005, she was named Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year.

Unable to keep up with home repairs after the loss of her former husband, the family's home fell into total disrepair. This winter when the wood-burning furnace was the only source of heat in the home, Anders-Beatty was forced to place three of her children-Drew, Reid and Tess with relatives. Tyler, the oldest, was away at college.

"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" is an Emmy Award-winning reality television series in which a family's house, including all rooms, exterior and landscaping, is made over by a team of builders and designers in seven days while the family goes on vacation.

The producers of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" selected Veridian Homes of Madison as the builder for the Wisconsin project in early July.

Many of Veridian's suppliers were called into action, including the owners of Tri-State Aluminum.

"Every day after receiving the final plans, not a day went by without thinking of the project at hand," Miller said. "The plan included the siding of a silo and this was always on our minds - trying to figure out the best way to accomplish this job."

On Thursday, July 24, the producers of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" and Veridian Homes announced that the Anders-Beatty family in Richland Center was selected.

"At this point our trucks were loaded and we heaped them with an additional 10 percent of what we estimated that we might need," Miller said. "We had to be prepared for whatever the project threw at us, for example, the silo. The siding crews are used to putting on siding on flat, straight surfaces. The round silo proved to be a little tricky."

It was an intense effort starting with the Brave Heart March at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, followed by the family leaving for Canada, and then the demolition of the family's home complete within just a few hours.

The producers scheduled to move the bus on Thursday, July 31 - and they did. This didn't allow much time to be off of the schedule. Both roofing and siding crews experienced some obstacles but "they stuck to it and got the job done," Miller said.

Miller said the many volunteers were very good at supplying water and food.

"Every time you turned around you heard someone calling 'water' or 'snack,'" he said.

With roofing and siding complete the few words Miller spoke due to pure exhaustion were "Unbelievable, truly unbelievable." The schedule was hectic.

"At night, the area was lit up like a Christmas tree," Miller said.

Other local companies that helped are Helwig Roofing, LLC, Belleville; Signature Construction, Monticello; Elite Builders, Monroe; PB Construction, Belleville; McSherry Construction, Belleville; Boley Construction, Belleville; and Beaver Creek Construction, Blanchardville.

"It's totally amazing what can get done with a group of good, hard working individuals," Miller said.

The Richland Center, Wisconsin, episode of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" is due to air in October.
