MONROE - A biannual arts tradtion since the early 1970s returns to Monroe High School next week.
The Fine Arts Festival will by Thursday and Friday, May 14-15. This year, students, staff and community members have been making and glazing bowls for a soup dinner fundraiser May 14 in the school's M-Room. Proceeds will be donated to four community services: Green County Interchurch Food Pantry, Green County Humane Society, Green Haven Family Advocates Inc. and Habitat for Humanity. Tickets are $10, and with your donation you will receive a handmade soup bowl filled with soup, bread, drink and desert.
The festival is an opportunity for staff and students and community to be involved with master workshops, lectures and performance presented by established artists, musicians, hobbyists, poets, artists, as well as highlighting student performers.
Funding for the Festival is provided by local businesses, service organizations, the Monroe Fine Arts Festival Community Foundation fund and private donations.
The vision of the School District of Monroe is "Preparing for the Future, One Child at a Time," with the mission, "The School District of Monroe will prepare each student for the future by developing academic, life, and employability skills. Fine Arts Festival will foster partnerships with family and community to ensure students success." The Fine Arts Festival will bring in masters in the Arts that the general curriculum cannot provide.
This year's theme is "Complete your own positive life's Puzzle." The goal is to send positive messages to students to give back to our community as well as enhance our school environment. "Every little part is a piece to your life's puzzle" is the festival theme this year.
Two schoolwide murals will be created. The projects will encompass school and student opportunities and making positive attitude choices to complete their own life's puzzle. One mural will be 22-by-8 feet and will include the image of the school and all the opportunities for students to explore "as parts of their upcoming life's puzzle choices." The second mural will be a pledge shown by their signed handprint, to be at school, have fun, give to others, and choose a positive attitude.
The public is invited to the Performing Arts Center events. Contact the high school for free tickets.
