MONROE - The Green County Humane Society is looking for foster families.

In a press release issued Wednesday the shelter announced it has a "dire need for foster homes for dogs at the animal shelter."

The shelter received 20 dogs after they were confiscated Feb. 24 from Bonnie K. Bitz, 46, Juda.

Shelter director Tonya Kelly said the humane society needs more space for the new dogs as well as strays that continue to come to the shelter.

"We have no more room," Kelly said. "If you have room in your heart and in your home, we ask that you consider becoming a foster parent to one of our animals."

Kelly said the only commitment foster parents would need to make would be to have the dogs for two to three weeks.

People who wish to foster dogs must have proof of current vaccinations for animals now living in their home as well as two references. A landlords' approval is also necessary for people who rent.

While foster families are expected to pay for food for the dogs, the humane society does send home a 5-pound bag of dog food when the person adopts the animal, Kelly said.

The dogs from Juda are not eligible for fostering until the case is resolved.

Bitz was arrested and charged Tuesday with two felony counts of mistreating animals causing death, two felony counts of mistreatment of animals resulting in disfigurement, one misdemeanor count of intentionally mistreating animals, two misdemeanor counts of intentionally failing to provide food for an animal and one misdemeanor count of improper animal shelter.

Bitz was released on a $5,000 signature bond. Her preliminary hearing is 3:30 p.m. March 19.
