A chili forecast for the Square on Oct. 3

MONROE - The call has gone out for all area chili cooks to bring their aprons and pots to Monroe's historic Courthouse Square for the 18th annual Chili Cookoff. The daylong event, sponsored by Monroe Main Street and Big Radio, will be from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3.

To receive a registration form and rules for the cookoff, cooks or teams of cooks may e-mail monroemainstreet@tds.net or phone 328-4023. The registration fee to enter the chili cooking event is $20. The good-natured competitiveness that permeates the event make entering the cookoff an annual event for some!However, new cooks and teams are welcome.

The cooks and helpers begin setting up at 7 a.m. with cooking to commence at 8 a.m. and judging set for noon. Judges will be local and area celebrities who will award first, second and third prizes in the traditional category and first and second prizes in the non-traditional entries. Also, awarded is the highly coveted People's Choice Award, chosen by attendees who may purchase samples for 25 cents or $2 a bowl.

New to this year's event will be an apple pie baking contest. Area bakers are encouraged to participate in the inaugural event as organizers hope to make it an annual event. The rules and registration forms also are available by at monroemainstreet@tds.net or by phoning 328-4023. Prizes also will be awarded in the traditional category and non-traditional categories. The public also may purchase samples of pie for 25 cents or $2 a slice. Ice cream will also be available for those wanting pie a la mode.

In addition to the cooking and baking contests, organizers have plans for numerous activities sure to include fun for those of all ages. The day will be jam-packed with fun events including live musical entertainment by The Steve Meisner Band and The Stateline Playboys, various food and beverage stands, tractors and motorcycles on display, a craft sale, scarecrow contest, and a Kid's Korner. Additionally, the always popular Monroe Main Street Farmers' Market will be located on the south side of the square.
