8th Street work nears completion

MONROE - A small gathering of business owners and engineers Wednesday occurred in the cafeteria of the Behring Senior Center to discuss the final month of the 8th Street Project.

Work should be completed at the end of September, Monroe Director of Public Works Al Gerber said. Completion is scheduled for Sept. 30.

Rock Road Construction of Janesville has been conducting the update to 8th Street since late March. Contractor Bob Kennedy updated Culver's co-owner Della Hathaway, executive director of Monroe Chamber of Commerce Melissa Even, Ruda Toyota's Jean Ruda and the Molinaros, who own Dairy Queen, on progress along the north side of the street.

Fehr Graham Project Leader Ken Plowman outlined the work to be done in September.

Concrete work is scheduled to be done along the driveways of businesses along the north side of 8th Street, including Dairy Queen, McDonald's and the Phillips 66 gas station. This will cause some entryways or exits to be closed as the cement is being poured. Paving will likely continue until Sept. 23.

"We hope we can get through this week-and-a-half and wipe that concrete out as soon as possible," Plowman said. "I want to make sure everybody's happy with the product they'll be getting."

Plowman said anyone who notices an issue, which needs to be corrected, should inform him of it.

Fehr Graham Senior Project Engineer Jesse Duff said traffic signals will not be turned on until both sides of the street are opened for traffic. He said street lights are usually the final step of any construction work.

"It's a lot of coordination between a number of different contractors," Duff said.

The new, improved signals will no longer run on a timer, but instead change color based on traffic. Crosswalks throughout the corridor will be improved, Duff said.

Business owners thanked the workers for their diligence in keeping the process from interrupting their daily operations. Kennedy expressed gratitude with public patience.

"You guys have been easy to work with, we appreciate that," Kennedy said.

A final layer of pavement will be applied to both sides of the street once work on the northside is completed.
