8th Street Update: Road closures planned due to safety concerns

After further review of recent traffic patterns and driver tendencies, the City of Monroe, Fehr Graham and Rock Road have decided to make some modifications to the upcoming paving plan. We have seen a number of motorists turn into oncoming traffic when only one direction is temporarily closed. This causes major concerns with driver, worker and public safety. Therefore additional closures will be incorporated into the paving operations this week.

• Monday night: 8th Street was closed from 3rd Avenue to Wisconsin 69 starting at 9 p.m. while crews lined sanitary sewer services. Roadway was reopened by 5 a.m. today.

• Today: The lower layer of asphalt will be paved in the westbound lanes along 8th Street. Traffic patterns will be the same as they have been for the last month. Driveways and side roads along the north side of 8th Street will be temporarily closed while crews pave through the driveways and side roads. All side-road driveways will remain open so that drivers can access businesses.

• Tonight: 8th Street will be closed from 1st Avenue to Wis. 69 starting at 9 p.m. while crews line sanitary sewer services and prepare surfaces for final paving. 8th Street will reopen by 5 a.m. Wednesday.

• Wednesday: The upper layer of asphalt will be paved in the westbound lanes along 8th Street. Traffic patterns will be the same as they have been for the last month. Driveways and side roads along the north side of 8th Street will be closed for most of the day while crews pave through the area. All side-road driveways will remain open so that drivers can access businesses. Due to the congestion between 3rd Avenue and Wis. 69, access to Piggly Wiggly, McDonalds and Dairy Queen will remain open throughout most of the day. Please expect delays while crews also work to remove temporary ramps around manholes and side roads.

• Wednesday night: 8th Street will be closed between 6th Avenue West and Wis. 69 starting at 9 p.m. while crews prepare the eastbound lanes for final paving. No access on or across 8th Street will be allowed, however side-road driveways will remain open so that drivers can access businesses.

• Thursday: 8th Street will remain closed at the project limits throughout the day while crews pave the final layer of asphalt along 8th Street. No access on or across 8th Street will be allowed; however, all side-road driveways will remain open so that drivers can access businesses. 8th Street is anticipated to reopen by 7 p.m. Sixth Avenue West will be reduced to one lane in each direction as crews remove the top surface of asphalt.

• Friday: 8th Street will reopen to traffic in both directions while crews pave 6th Avenue West, which will be reduced to one lane in each direction. There may be delays at the Wis. 11 ramps so we encourage users to use alternate routes.

Please expect delays throughout the corridor as there will be a large amount of construction equipment and workers in the area. Additional modifications to the paving plan may be necessary throughout the week depending on driver tendencies, contractor operations and changes in weather. We understand the daytime closure of 8th Street on Thursday will be an inconvenience. However, the additional closure will reduce the overall closure time of many of the driveways and is necessary to maintain public safety.
