MONROE - A fire destroyed a storage shed and a cattle shed early this morning at a farm owned by Gene and Carol Weiss at W5291 County FF.
Monroe Fire Chief Daryl Rausch said seven departments - Monroe, Brodhead, Monticello, New Glarus, Albany, Juda and Browntown - responded to the scene. The Monroe Fire Department was called out at about 12:30 a.m.
Rausch said the sheds were fully engulfed when the fire department arrived and the fire was under control by about 2:30 a.m. Firefighters remained on the scene until about 8:30 a.m. The buildings continued to smolder for several hours after the fire was under control.
Steve Nelson, who works part-time at the farm, said the Weisses were not home at the time of the fire. He alerted the fire department, he said, after he saw the flames.
The buildings were destroyed. It doesn't appear that any animals were lost in the blaze, Rausch said. Rausch said it's unlikely the cause will be determined.
The Cedarville, Ill., and Orangeville, Ill., fire departments were on stand-by in Monroe while the Monroe Fire Department responded to the scene.
The Green County Sheriff's Department also assisted at the scene.
