MONROE - Five people - three incumbents and two newcomers - are vying for three open spots on the Monroe school board to be contested during the April 4 election.

Board treasurer Brian Keith, Jim Plourde and clerk Michael Boehme are all seeking re-election this year.

Cheryl McGuire and Nikki Matley also are vying for positions.

McGuire worked in three different positions for the district over the course of 14 years.

"I think I could be a positive addition, just because of my experience," McGuire said. "I do know a lot of the community, parents and staff, so I know they'll be supportive."

Both of her children have graduated from the school district. McGuire said a main area of focus for her is to help reduce the number of children enrolling in other schools nearby rather than choosing Monroe.

Matley serves as president of the Green County Development Corporation and co-chair of the Green County Leaders, has worked with the Monroe Chamber and served as treasurer for the Say "Yes" to Monroe Schools group. Now she's hoping to add school board member to her list of leadership roles.

"I feel like my role as a leader in this community has prepared me for this job," Matley said. "I'm passionate about the community. It's important for the board to be connected. I can continue to foster those relationships."

A key part of her plans on the school board include easing the transition for an incoming superintendent in 2017 by introducing them to the community. She was hopeful to serve using her perspective as parent to two children, one in fifth grade and the other in eighth in the district.
