ARGYLE - Three people died as the result of a house fire in Argyle early Friday morning, Sept. 7. Another person was hospitalized in critical condition Friday, according to law enforcement officials.

The fire occurred at about 3 a.m. at 402 Oak St.

Two other individuals were treated and released, according to law enforcement officials. The names of the victims and their ages have not been released.

However, Nichole Schweitzer, principal at Argyle School, was quoted in an Associated Press story as saying "a tragedy" had occurred involving elementary school-age children. Schweitzer said counselors were at the school to help students and staff deal with the loss.

"Everyone here knows each other regardless of age or grade. What happens to one, happens to all. It's a sad day for us," Schweitzer said.

Thomas Zwicker, Monroe, owns the property. He said he rented the home to a husband, wife and their four children. Zwicker was told the three oldest children died in the fire, he told the Wisconsin State Journal.

Officials were at the scene of the fire throughout the day Friday. They would not answer questions about the investigation or the victims. Argyle police did not return phone calls from The Monroe Times, and the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department said no further information on the case or the victims was available.

Argyle police requested the State Fire Marshal at the state Department of Justice assist in the investigation. The investigation remains ongoing, officials said.

Agencies called in to assist also included Argyle EMS, Blanchardvile Fire Department and EMS and Green County EMS.
