FREEPORT — For the second time in as many days, Stephenson County had a fatal accident on its roads.
On March 26, an Orangeville woman was killed on Ill. 26. The next day, authorities had to respond to another deadly crash, this time in Freeport.
At approximately 3:02 p.m. on March 27, Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office personnel responded to the area of Baileyville Road and Lamm Road in rural Freeport for a report of a two-vehicle traffic crash with an unresponsive occupant, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.
A preliminary investigation indicates that a gray 2019 Dodge Journey driven by a 73-year-old man from Orland Hills, Illinois disregarded a stop sign while traveling eastbound on Lamm Road and was struck by a semi-truck and trailer that was traveling northbound on Baileyville Road near Freeport’s south side. The 73-year-old man from Orland Hills was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the semi, a 33-year-old Lanark, Ill. man, was not injured.
The traffic crash remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit and an autopsy is pending.
The Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Freeport Rural Fire Department, Star Ambulance, the Stephenson County Coroner’s Office, and the Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit.
