MONROE — The Foreign Type Cheesemaker’s Association announces the results of the 2022 Green County Fair Cheese Contest & Auction. They had 31 bidders with a total Auction of $75,847.50 on 79 pieces of cheese (a total of 416 pounds).
The Grand Champion, 40-pound Baby Swiss made by Richard Buss, Jr of Chalet Cheese Co-op, Monroe, sold for an average of $234.38/pound for a total of $9,375.00.
Spring Grove Dairy entered the highest bid per pound of $325.00 for 6-pounds of Muenster made by Matt Henze, Decatur Dairy, Inc., Brodhead. The 9-pound piece of Buholzer Brothers Dill Havarti entered by Luke Buholzer garnered the highest lot price of $2,430.00 with the winning bid from Faith Engineering, Inc. Regez Supply Co was the largest purchaser at this year’s auction.
Thanks go to all bidders and purchasers who made this auction such a success, the Foreign Type Cheesemaker’s Association said in a press release in late July.
They also thanked Dave & Rena Koning, Paul Beach, Joe Mellem and Cal Shaver for conducting an “excellent” auction. Alpine Slicing of Monroe provided their services in cutting and packaging all of the cheese for auction.
“Foreign Type is very proud of their Cheesemakers and the excellent cheese they produce,” the press release stated. The cheese that was not sold at the auction (approximately 240 pounds) was donated to the Monroe and Green County Food Pantries for distribution in local communities.
The auction proceeds will support the United Way, the National Historic Cheesemaking Center, the Green County Fair, and other Dairy & Cheese related events over the next year.
