BLANCHARDVILLE - A 2-year-old boy from Blanchardville will be featured this weekend during a video presentation in New York City to raise awareness for Down syndrome.
A photograph of Angelo Michael Mitra was selected out of more than 1,000 entries in a world-wide contest coordinated by the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) to be in a video that promotes the value, acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome.
"His picture will be on the Jumbotron," said his mother, Misty Walker-Mitra.
Her friend Kendra Leonard snapped the photo, called "A Boy and His Bubbles," during a trip to Springfield, Mo.
More than 200 photos will appear in the video, which screens Saturday, Sept. 22 on the News Corporation Sony Screen in the heart of Times Square.
The Times Square video presentation kicks off Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October. The 18th Annual New York City Buddy Walk in Central Park follows the presentation. This year, Buddy Walk events will be held in more than 250 cities across the country, as well as select international locations. NDSS is a nonprofit organization with more than 350 affiliates nationwide representing more than 400,000 Americans who have Down syndrome. The group "envisions a world in which all people with Down syndrome have the opportunity to enhance their quality of life, realize their life aspirations, and become valued members of welcoming communities."
