MONROE - A two-car collision Friday morning east of Smock Valley Road on Wisconsin 11 resulted in multiple injuries, Monroe Fire Chief Dan Smits said.

The crash occurred just before 10:52 a.m. Friday when Alvin G. Schutte, 90, Monroe, failed to slow his 2012 Kia Sedona minivan and collided with a Ford F450 pickup truck driven by Jon C. Steinmann, 48, Monroe, who had slowed down because of an oversized load semi partially blocking the highway.

Green County Sheriff Mark Rohloff released information about the incident Friday afternoon. According to preliminary reports, the front of the van hit the back of the truck, causing severe damage to both the van and truck. Both vehicles were towed from the scene. Rohloff said Schutte was distracted by the semi blocking part of the roadway, which resulted in the accident.

"Thankfully, it wasn't as bad as it could be," Smits said, noting the overloaded truck was narrowly avoided in the collision.

Green County EMS Chief Dan Nufer said technicians and paramedics arrived at the scene with two ambulances and a quick response vehicle.

Steinmann sustained minor injuries and was transported to Monroe Clinic Hospital. Schutte and his passenger, Algreta A. Schutte, 87, were both transported by Green County EMS to Monroe Clinic Hospital as well. Nufer said he did not know the extent of their injuries.

Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley said city officers helped route the flow of traffic, which was greatly slowed, before the Green County Sheriff's Department arrived. Westbound lanes were shut down and detoured for roughly 50 minutes.

Rohloff said Schutte was cited for following too closely. Schutte was released pending a non-mandatory court appearance at 8:30 a.m.
