MONROE - Two city aldermen have announced they are not running for re-election to the Common Council in April.
Keith Ingwell, Ward 6 alderman for 14 years, and Dan Henke, Ward 8 alderman for 4 years, have signed notification of non-candidacy with the city clerk.
"I decided four years is probably enough," Henke said Tuesday. "Everyone should have the opportunity to run and see what it's all about - and get a better feel for what's involved."
Ingwell, originally appointed to the Ward 6 seat, recently retired and said it is time for him to retire from Common Council as well and focus on personal interests.
"Fourteen years is enough," he said.
The departure of two senior council members leaves the positions open for newcomers to the Council.
David Riese has signed a candidacy registration statement for Ward 6, and Reid Stangel signed candidacy papers for Ward 8.
Stangel is serving a five-year appointment on the Board of Police and Fire Commissioners. David Riese is serving a three-year term on the Historic Preservation Committee.
Council seats in the even numbered wards are up for election this spring. Alderman positions are two-year terms.
The Ward 9 seat is also up for election to finish its term. Kent Kallembach has verbally informed the city clerk's office that he will run for Ward 9.
Kallembach is currently filling the seat, appointed to the position following the resignation of Mike Rivers on July 28.
Chris Beer has also signed a campaign registration statement for Ward 9. In Ward 2, incumbent Paul Hannes and Brooke J. Bauman have signed campaign registration statements.
In Ward 10, incumbent Charles Schuringa and Tyler Schultz signed registration statements. Schultz finished second in a three-way race for Monroe mayor in April. Schultz was appointed to a three-year term to the Zoning Board of Appeals in April.
So far, incumbent Jan Lefevre is the only person who has registered a campaign statement for Ward 4.
She will be seeking a fourth term. Lefevre was challenged in 2009 by Dan DeMuth, winning 127 to 82 in her third run for the alderman position. She ran against Dr. John Frantz for her first term and unopposed for her second term.
All candidates are required to have their nomination papers filed with the city clerk by 5 p.m. Jan. 4.
Campaign registration statements should be filed before nomination papers are circulated.
Both Henke and Ingwell currently serve on the City of Monroe Salary and Personnel Committee. Ingwell is also on the Board of Public Works, the Public Safety Committee and the Ethics Board.
Henke serves on the Finance and Taxation Committee and the Judiciary and Ordinance Review Committee. Both men have served as Council presidents.
Henke ran unsuccessfully for the 80th District Assembly seat in November, losing to Janis Ringhand.
None of the Green County board supervisors are up for election this year. All 32 seats will be up for election in 2012.
