DARLINGTON - An early Thanksgiving morning crash in Darlington claimed the life of a 74-year-old Illinois man.
The City of Darlington Police Department is investigating a two-vehicle accident at about 5:15 a.m. Thursday on Galena Street in Darlington, which left Horst Haenert of Scales Mound, Ill., dead at the scene.
Initial police investigation revealed that a vehicle driven by Haley Andrews, 24, of Darlington, was northbound, when it went left of the center line and struck Haenert's vehicle head-on.
Haenert was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by Lafayette County Coroner Alyce Douglas.
Andrews and her passenger Amy Fitzsimons, 23, Darlington, were transported by ambulance to Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County. Both females sustained minor injuries and were treated and released from the hospital.
The crash location is a residential street with a posted speed limit of 25 miles per hour. Alcohol and speed appear to be a contributing factor, according to a police report.
Darlington Police Department, Darlington Fire Department, Rural Medical Ambulance Service, and Lafayette County Sheriff's Department were dispatched to the scene.
