ARGYLE - Crews on Sunday searched a second day for a rural Browntown man who was missing after a boating accident on the Pecatonica River that left one man dead and another man hospitalized.

The Lafayette County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call just after noon Saturday, reporting a boating accident on the Pecatonica River just below the dam in Argyle.

The three men were fishing near the dam when their boat was pulled into the spillway "due to the extreme current generated by the high river level," Lafayette County Sheriff Reg Gill said in a news release. All three were thrown from the boat when it overturned.

First responders rescued two of the men from the river. Thomas L. Melland, 46, Monroe, and Michael H. Wilson, 46, Brodhead, were taken to Monroe Clinic hospital. Melland was Medflighted to University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, and was pronounced dead there later Saturday night. Wilson was treated for hypothermia.

The third man, Kevin L. Holverson, 42, remained unaccounted for as of Sunday night. Crews searched the river for Holverson on Saturday until dark. The search resumed Sunday at 7 a.m. and continued until about 4:30 p.m.

The Argyle Fire Department and EMS were assisted on the scene by Blanchardville EMS, Green County EMS, the Darlington Fire Department and the Southwest Wisconsin Technical Rescue Team. The Dane County Dive Team also searched the river Sunday.

Gill's department and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is investigating the accident. More information will be released as it becomes available, Gill said.
