NEW GLARUS — New Glarus Home was one of 64 nursing homes across the U.S. that had no COVID-19 outbreaks from May 2020 to January 2021 according to U.S. Government Accountability Office Report.

Last week, the GAO publicly released their analysis of data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). GAO found that from May 2020 to January 2021, nursing homes had an average of about three outbreaks during the review period, with most of the nursing homes (94%) experiencing more than one COVID-19 outbreak. New Glarus Home was one of only 64 nursing homes across the nation that experienced no outbreaks during the 8-month period. That is to say, New Glarus Home is among 0.5% of all nursing homes included in the data provided by CMS.

“We are honored and humbled to be recognized for our efforts in achieving such a remarkable milestone,” Erin Francois, Executive Director of New Glarus Home said. “We are 1 of 64 nursing homes that had no outbreaks of COVID-19, but our team is one of thousands of nursing homes across this country serving our senior population with compassion, dedication and commitment.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a disproportionate impact on the 1.4 million elderly or disabled residents in the nation’s more than 15,000 Medicare — and Medicaid — certified nursing homes.

“We know that asymptomatic transmission is a contributing factor to nursing home outbreaks and we owe our success to strict adherence to infection prevention practices, including routine testing and screening of staff. These infection prevention measures were key in identifying risk of infection and preventing transmission,” said Francois.
