Laidlaw Corporation started manufacturing hangers in the Monticello area in June of 1972. The 48,000 square foot building was located on five acres on the northeast corner of the village on Pratt Road. Around one million hangers were manufactured a day at the Monticello plant. There were about 18 different types of hangers made the plant and were shipped via semi-truck to mostly the Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and St. Paul areas. A railroad spur was put in for receiving raw materials in 1974. Laidlaw operated in Monticello until 1995. This October 1972 photo shows an unidentified worker arranging hangers before they went into the coating oven.
