Levi Fisher Ames was a civil war soldier that settled in Monroe. He began carving animals and fantastical animals such as pictured above that were about 5 to 6 inches tall. From Aug. 30 through Oct. 4, the Monroe Arts Center will have a showing of these carvings on loan from Kohler Museum.
A catalog of Ames’ work is available at the Green County Historical Museum, which is open summer weekend afternoons June through September.
Another note: The archivists also want to know the location of Wintergreen Hill on Browntown Road. There is some reporting that water would often wash out the road, so the location is unclear whether it could be the valley just west of Cadiz Spring Park or the hill just east of the park.
