This fire bell is the “Property of the Monroe Fire Department, donated by Mrs. Durner, whose father Mr. Gabriel used the bell to call firemen in 1858.” This item and many other historical fire department items are at Fire Station Number 1 on the west side of Monroe. Thanks to Ken Rufer and Chief Dan Smits for the tour and information.
The Green County Historical Society is soon closing out its summer season. An invitation to visit until the end of October is extended to all interested in the early history of Monroe and Green County. Staff have been making exciting changes and new items are received throughout the year. A benefit breakfast will be held at the Moose Lodge from 8 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Nov. 3. This event and generous donations allow the historical society to continue to remain open and active. Visit greencountywihistoricalsociety.org. Comments or donations can be sent to Green County Historical Society, P.O. Box 804, Monroe.
