Rat Hollow, one of the 120 rural schools of Green County, was located at N5304 Rat Hollow Road in Adams Township. Rat Hollow is named after the community where it was located. While threshing at the old Johnson stone house a half-mile from the school, workers found an unusual number of rats under the grain shocks and nicknamed the place “Rat Hollow.” The name stuck. The building shown here was built in 1921 and served the district until it was closed during consolidation in 1962. Lillian Swann was the last teacher here. Anyone who can identify any of the students in this photo taken between 1939 and 1941 while Roy Lewis was the teacher should contact Matt at 608-325-6503 or mfigi48@tds.net.
