The Green County Historical Society Museum is now open with a new display about the gas stations that have been in Monroe since the beginning. Opening Day was June 7, and the museum is open on Saturdays from 1-4 p.m. Stop in and see the oldest church building still standing in Monroe and learn about the History of Monroe and Green County.
This photo is of one of the areas first gasoline stations/convenience stores owned by Charles Buehler, Jr. He operated this location as a grocery store/filling station known as “The Jug” and then as Buehler’s Red Bell Market at 800 30th Street in the late 1930s. The business was then operated by Leon Boegeli into the 1960s. Notice the sign for gas at 6 gallons for $1.08. This photo is from the 1940s.
The Jug handle is now gone and houses a men’s shelter.
This photo is on page 96 of the Pictorial History of Monroe, which can be purchased from the Green County Historical Society. The Society has a few photos of “Gas Stations of Monroe” and would like any old photos of stations that were in Monroe from the first one in 1927. They would be greatly appreciated and can be emailed to Linda Lostetter at
