New Glarus long held one of two Civil War cannons in front of its elementary school; it was restored and is now on display at the Swiss Historical Village. The other cannon is shown here having been blown up on the Fourth of July in 1912. The remains of this cannon sit in front of Civil War veterans Fridolin Streiff and Ulrich Kubly. Supposedly, this cannon blew up near Railroad Street during a community fourth of July celebratory shooting. The building in the background is the Elmer residence located behind where Roy’s Market stands today.
