Green County Historical Society

MONROE — The Green County Historical Society has been busy all winter reorganizing the museum for opening this season. In a brand new area for viewing, on a large screen television, is an 800 photo slideshow of antique “glass negative” photos taken by William Trukenbrod, an early 20th century Monroe photographer. Photos are of Monroe landmarks and residents, county fairs, courthouse square, Monticello sheriff’s murder, parades, many county photos and more. Identification of any photos would be much appreciated. Photo books containing some of the photos are for sale at the museum.

The museum is air-conditioned for the comfort of visitors. There are displays from the 1800s through the 1990s. Many of the items could be recognizable to visitors.

The museum is open weekend afternoons from 1-4 p.m. with guided or self-guided tours. Greeters are on hand to answer any questions. The one-room Bethel School is also a wonderful attraction to visit. The museum continues to look for penny loafers, a small portable 45 rpm record player and a transistor radio, among any other late century items.
