Autograph books or albums were very popular in the 19th and 20th centuries. Young ladies would have their friends write little ditties to them. This ornate book was given to the Historical Society with others and some of the poems are as follows:

“When on this page; You chance to look; Just think of me; And close the book.

“When you are sitting all alone; Reflecting on the past; Remember that you have a friend; that will forever last.

“When years and months have glided by; And on this page you cast your eye; Remember it was a sister sincere; That left this kind remembrance here.

“Don’t marry a man to reform him; Don’t be by his promises led; If he can not be a man when he’s wooing; he cannot be when he’s wed.

“When you get married; And your husband gets cross; Come over to my house; And we’ll eat applesauce.

“Forget me not; Forget me never; Till God my eyes; Shall close forever.”
