In May of 1938, the last horse hitching posts from around the edge of the court house park were removed. The only downtown horse hitching posts will be in Spring Square, just south of the Courthouse square. Little use has been made of the last remaining group of them in recent years. Chains at one time hung between them. This old photo shows the west side of the square. The Green County Historical Society is reorganizing their displays and would like donations of items used in Monroe during the 1950s through 1990s. We are interested in an aluminum Christmas tree, portable television with rabbit ears, portable 45 RPM record player, poodle skirt, and a barber pole. Also, small items to set up a living room from that time period. Call 608-325-9730.

Be sure to check out our window display in the Creative Photography window just south of the square on 17th Avenue. - Photo supplied by the Green County Historical Society
