Marissa & Ebony

Marissa Vosberg, a sophomore at Monroe High School, talks about her best friend Ebony, a 7-month-old registered Holstein.

Vosberg is a member of the Young Americans 4-H Club and has been showing cows for about nine years. This year, she’ll be showing Ebony at the Green County Fair.

Best Friends is a weekly feature designed to highlight a local resident and his or her pets. To suggest someone for the series, contact Marissa Weiher, photographer, at photo@themonroetimes.com.

Describe Ebony’s personality.

She’s pretty mellow. She’s the kind of heifer that will just stand there and let you pet her all day. She goes with the flow and she’s really sweet. Both of her parents were red and white and she’s ones of the blackest cows we’ve had.

What do you and Ebony like to do together?

I wash her and I feed her. I take her on walks every day so she gets plenty of exercise and is comfortable around people. I also brush her to help make her social. I check on her every day to make sure she’s not hurt or anything.

What has it been like having Ebony in your life?

Showing cows is one of the biggest things that have made me who I am today. It’s taught me responsibility. It’s shown me hard work really does pay off. The more work you put into it, the better the outcome. I’ve also made a lot of friends showing at the fair. Ebony is definitely one of the more mellow and outgoing calves I’ve had. She just wants to be around you all of the time.
