When I came across the following article in the June 14, 1871 issue of the Monroe Sentinel, I thought that it would be a very interesting article about what Monroe was like 20 years earlier. It is a little bit of that, but it is also a large advertisement for how successful the newspaper advertisers became because of the ads they placed! To those who have studied Monroe history, many of the names will be familiar.
