MONROE - The Green County Fair was host to the sixth annual Dairy Youth Recognition Auction in cooperation with the Foreign Type Cheesemakers cheese auction. Ten 4-H and FFA dairy exhibitors were recognized for their outstanding accomplishments. A keepsake picture award is given to each successful bidder as a token of appreciation in place of the animal. A gift box of cheese, furnished by the Green County Ag Chest, is also presented to the winning bidder.
This year's auction netted over $6,300 in bids and donations from area businesses. Youth selling at the Dairy Youth Recognition Auction receive half the amount bid in the form of savings bonds. Proceeds from the Dairy Youth Recognition Auction are used to fund scholarships to assist 4-H and FFA dairy project members in enhancing and furthering their education. Through the proceeds gathered from previous auctions, $2,000 in scholarships were also presented to four Green County dairy youth to further their post high school education. Receiving scholarships were Tommy Butts, Ashely Nimtz, Kristen Rupnow and Brianna Voegeli.
Showing the Supreme Senior Champion Registered Female was Brienne Hendrickson, daughter of Kate and Jeff Hendrickson of Dayton Dairylanders 4-H club. High bidder was The Swiss Colony and contending bidder was Klondike Cheese. Paige Hoesly, Clarence Bridge Pioneer 4-H, and daughter of Todd and Trisha Hoesly, had the Supreme Junior Champion Registered Female. Her entry received a top bid from Klondike Cheese with Mahlkuch Electric as the contending bidder. New Glarus FFA member Chris Kempfer, son of Mike and Cherri Kempfer, showed the Supreme Senior Champion Grade Female. Top bidding honors went to New Glarus FFA Alumni and Mahlkuch Electric runner-up. Winning the bid for the Supreme Junior Champion Grade Female, exhibited by Rachael Schieldt, was Klondike Cheese, second bidder was Mark's Chemical LLC. Schieldt, of the New Glarus 4-H club is the daughter of Greg and Michelle Schieldt.
The low somatic cell count cow was exhibited by Joel Dieckhoff. He is a member of the Juda Jolly Juniors 4-H club and son of Deb and John Dieckhoff. Monroe Westfalia Surge was the top bidder with Monroe Feed and Wisconsin Community Bank both contending. Kristen Smith, daughter of Randall and Jane Smith, a Washington Center 4-H member, was the Sportsmanship Champion. This new recognition is presented to an outstanding Senior Dairy Exhibitor who has demonstrated strong sportsmanship in and outside of the show ring, enthusiasm for the project, a willingness to help others and a strong commitment to the youth dairy project. The top bid went to Nathan Hartwig and First Banking Center was contending.
The Beginning Showmanship Winner was Taylor Behnke, New Glarus 4-H member, with Fred and Joyce Feldt having the winning bid and the contenting bidder was New Glarus FFA Alumni. Behnke is the daughter of Roger and Lisa Behnke. Brooks Hendrickson, son of Kate and Jeff Hendrickson, a Dayton Dairyland 4-H member, was the Intermediate Showmanship winner. The winning bid for his recognition was by Brugger Dairy LLC. Cassie Wymer, Clarence Bridge Pioneer 4-H member, daughter of Valerie and Jeff Wymer, was the recipient of the Senior Showmanship award and received a top bid from Rackow's Family Sausage. Earning the prestigious award of Supreme Showmanship Champion was Dayton Dairylanders 4-H member, Brienne Hendrickson. She is the daughter of Jeff and Kate Hendrickson. The winning bid for her recognition came from Mahlkuch Electric with the Gasthaus Motel as the contending bidder.
Additional donors to the Dairy Youth Recognition Auction are: Monroe Veterinary Service, Chalet Cheese Co-op and New Glarus Primrose Winery. Dave Koning and Paul Beach donated their talents as professional auctioneers and local dairy queens were on hand to assist with the presentation of awards.
