MONROE - As this year's United Way campaign was just getting underway Susie Speer, executive director of the United Way of Green County, Inc., was visited by three area youth who, according to Speer, "served as a wonderful kickoff to this year's campaign and demonstrated to all of us exactly what it means to Live United."
Kelley Baumann, 12, Tanner Thompson, 11 and Nick Baumann, 9, were looking for a way to help people in the community. During a recent event in their neighborhood, the three decided to have a fundraiser. They opened a stand that offered delicious "chocolate chip cookies" in return for donations from their passing patrons. After talking with their parents about ways their money could help in the community, they chose to donate the proceeds of their chocolate chip cookie stand to the United Way.
Speer said "their efforts set a great example for all of us ... everyone has the ability to help in some way and if we all do what we can to help, it makes our community better for everyone ... that is what it means to Live United."
