Winners from KC's shooting contest named

MONROE - The Knights of Columbus Free Throw competition was held Jan. 16 in the gym at Monroe High School. The contest was sponsored by The Supreme Advocate Harold Lamely Council 01471 of the Knights of Columbus in Monroe.

This year, council member and MHS basketball coach Pat Murphy co-chaired the event. Twelve boys and girls from Monroe participated. All youngsters ages 10 to 14, regardless of affiliation with the Knights of Columbus, were eligible to participate.

Seven boys and girls from Monroe, ages 10 to 14, were named local champions for the 2011 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship, earning the right to compete at the district level, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 5 in Beloit. This year saw the return of many competitive match-ups and winners from prior years.

For the Monroe council, a tie against Mark Jenson and Austin Murphy ended with Austin being champion in the 14 year-old group for boys. Logan Weckerly repeated last year's win in the 12-year-old group as a winner in the 13-year-old group for boys. Tyler Elmer was the champion in the 12-year-old group, repeating his performance of last year for the 11-year-old group. Alex Tordoff won against Jacob Kind to secure second-place in 11-year-old category.

Paige Murphy was the winner for the girls in the 12-year-old category. In the 11-year-old bracket, David Keegan was the winner, surviving a shoot-out against Hunter Weckerly. Brayden Zettle was the boy's champion for 10-year-olds, while Madison Katzenberger was the winner in this age group for the girls.

Each of the 12 contestants was allowed 15 free-throw attempts in the contest. Ties were settled by successive rounds of five free throws per contestant. Each of these winners, along with champions from the four other councils in District 42, are eligible to compete in the district competition with an eye toward moving on to the state and international levels of competition.

The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district, diocesan and state competitions. International champions are announced by the Knights of Columbus International headquarters based on the scores from the state-level competitions.

All boys and girls 10 to 14 regardless of affiliation with the Knights of Columbus are eligible to participate and will compete in their respective age divisions.
