MONROE — School’s out for summer, but a group of four educators from Sauk Prairie are taking the show on the road to bring some Americana and folk rock to Monroe for a Concert on the Square with Water Street Jacks on July 25.
Sauk Prairie Middle School Principal Ted Harter leads the Jacks with vocals, guidance counselor Owen Murphy plays the mandolin, Hans Fester plays the drums when he’s not teaching physical education, and Sauk Prairie High School Choir Director Matt Brennan is on keys.
Those who like Mumford and Sons, the Avett Brothers or the Lumineers will love Water Street Jacks. They play some covers, they sing four-part harmony, and they spice it up with an “unorthodox mix” of original tunes. The band’s most recent big gig was last month on the Miller Lite Oasis Stage at Summerfest in Milwaukee.
The show on July 25 also brings “Lighting up the Dark” to downtown Monroe — an evening to celebrate those who work to support the mental health needs of our community. Their mission can be emotional, powerful, and difficult to talk about; the goal for the evening is to build awareness of resources and to spread the message that together we will support each other. Concert goers are reminded to sign up for the “Best Seat in the House” contest with premium seating on custom Adirondack chairs and a prize package including pizza from Suisse Haus, popcorn from Rainbow Confections, drink tickets from the beer stand, plus fun swag from Main Street Monroe, Heartland Graphics and Green County Cheese Days. Register at Heartland Graphics; winners are drawn prior to each show.
Main Street Monroe’s popular summer concert series is underwritten by Colony Brands. Upcoming shows are Red Hot Horn Dawgs on Aug. 2 (Community Drum Ensemble at intermission and a Salute to Monroe Class of 1979), and Fletcher Rockwell on Aug. 1 (with Prince and Princess Night sponsored by Monroe Park and Recreation).
New this year at the Main Street Beverage Garden — order a specialty cocktail like a Lime Margarita or a Whiskey Old Fashioned. Proceeds from the Beverage Garden are shared by Main Street Monroe, Green Haven and Green County Child Advocacy Center. Carry-ins are not allowed for alcoholic beverages, but a to-go dinner from one of the downtown restaurants is welcome.
Those who enjoy Concerts on the Square and other Main Street events can consider getting involved as a volunteer. For more information: mainstreetmonroe.org, or contact Jordan Nordby, Main Street Director, at 608-328-4023.
